Man waives hearing for shooting near YSU in which student was injured

YOUNGSTOWN — The man accused of opening fire on a carload of females, including a Youngstown State University student earlier this month, waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Sylean Wilson, 19, appeared for the hearing today before Judge Elizabeth Kobly of Youngstown Municipal Court. Wilson faces multiple counts of felonious assault.

Wilson, with his attorney Walter Madison, elected to waive the hearing meaning the case will be presented to a Mahoning County grand jury.

Police say Wilson stood near Pennsylvania Avenue firing at a car in which a group of young women were seated. Wilson is believed to have fired multiple shots at the car, even stepping forward at one point to take better aim.

Brittany N. Johnson, 23, of Bedford Heights, a YSU nursing student, was taken by a friend early Sunday to St. Elizabeth Health Center after being shot in the torso while in the vehicle parked on Pennsylvania Avenue.
