Cincy parking rates, fines could rise

CINCINNATI (AP) — A proposed lease for Cincinnati’s parking system would result in rising fines for meter violations that could reach $100.

Some merchants are concerned that big fines, higher rates and extended meter hours could deter people from downtown.

The city is considering a 30-year deal that would mean $92 million up front and $3 million a year. The money would go for development projects and city budget needs.

The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that the proposed agreement with the Port of Greater Cincinnati Development Authority drew mostly negative reviews Monday night in a public hearing. Meters would be upgraded to allow payments with credit cards and smartphones.

Fines would rise from the current $35 to $45, and could continue to increase over the contract up to a cap of $100.
