Business classes target artists

YOUNGSTOWN
A four-part series of professional development classes designed to help Mahoning Valley artists thrive financially will begin next week.
Titled “The Arts Mean Business,” the series is sponsored by Youngstown State University’s College of Fine and Performing Arts and Power of the Arts, a community arts and cultural group.
Each of the two-hour classes are aimed at the business side of the arts. Each session is free but registration is required. Go to powerofthearts.org or call Cary Wecht, associate dean of the College of Fine and Performing Arts, at 330-941-2337.
The quarterly classes are independent of one another, and artists can choose to go to any or all of them.
First up will be “What the Heck is an LLC?,” which will begin at 5:30 p.m. March 7 at the McDonough Museum of Art on YSU’s campus. The speaker will be Atty. James S. Simon, and Wecht will serve as moderator. The topic will be the limited-liability company business structure.
“Artists are more than three times as likely to be self-employed,” said Wecht. “This series is meant to assist their businesses and help people appreciate what artists contribute to the economic health and cultural vitality of their communities.”
