NILES

Eric Lanham, a member of the Niles Board of Education since 2010, has resigned citing “the growth of personal and professional responsibilities.” Lanham was serving the final year of his first four-year term.

The board is seeking applications for his replacement. Candidates must be school-district residents and registered voters. They are required to send a letter of interest or a resume to the board offices, 100 West St., Niles, 44446, no later than March 11, after which the board will conduct interviews.

Under state law, the board has to appoint Lanham’s replacement at its next meeting March 21. The winning candidate will have to stand for election for a full term in November.

Cause of death

The Mahoning County Coroner’s office has determined that the elderly man found dead along Salt Springs Road on Friday died of an acute coronary event.

James LaRubbio, 91, of Austintown, was found by a Youngstown police officer on patrol about 8 a.m. The officer noticed a car sitting far off the roadway along Salt Springs Road. When the officer went to check the car, he found LaRubbio’s body not far from where the car was parked.

The coroner, in a press release, said there is no evidence that LaRubbio froze to death or met with any violence. He also ruled out death from the apparent car accident.

Student’s death

PULASKI, Pa.

The Lawrence County Coroner’s office has determined that a Youngstown State University student killed in a car accident over the weekend died from blunt-force trauma to the head.

Brandon St. Pierre, 21, of Youngstown, was involved in a one-car accident about 3 p.m. Sunday along Pennsylvania Route 208 near the Interstate 376 interchange in Pulaski Township. He was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.

St. Pierre was a graduate of Cardinal Mooney High School, where he played football.

Suspect sought

YOUNGSTOWN

Police are looking for the man who entered a South Side home, pistol-whipped one of the occupants and ran off with the victim’s wallet.

According to police, a 26-year-old man and a 22-year-old woman were sitting in an East Boston Avenue home late Friday evening when a man came through the door brandishing a gun and ordering them to the floor. The assailant, wearing a hooded shirt and dark pants, hit the man in the face with the gun before going through his pockets and taking his wallet.

The armed thief attempted to steal a television, but it proved too large to carry, so he just ran out of the house, police said.

Cemetery cleanup

The annual cleanup of Tod Homestead Cemetery, 2200 Belmont Ave., will take place March 15. All decorations, including solar lights, will be removed at this time. Anyone wishing to recover their decorations must do so before the cleanup begins. For information, call the cemetery at 330-743-3194.

The Mahoning County Land Bank board of directors will have a regular meeting at noon today in the county commissioners’ conference room, second floor, 21 W. Boardman St.

Special meeting

The board of education is having a special meeting tonight to narrow down a list of potential candidates for the superintendent’s position.

Nora J. Montanez, school-district treasurer, said the board will convene in executive session to discuss the superintendent search. Montanez said the board narrowed the pool of potential superintendents to 10 after three separate meetings last week. She said the board may reduce the number of candidates to three after today’s meeting. Thomas D. Robey, Campbell’s current superintendent, is scheduled to retire at the end of the school year. Montanez said the board is hoping to announce the district’s new superintendent during a March 19 school-board meeting,

Spring cleanup

A spring cleanup is planned for the cemeteries of the Youngstown Diocese. All artificial flowers and decorations must be removed by Friday from Calvary, Resurrection and All Souls cemeteries.

Cookie time

Trucks filled with Girl Scout cookies will deliver the treats this week across the 18-county the Girl Scouts of North East Ohio region to fill orders obtained by the scouts during the 2013 Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Girl Scout Cookie Booth sales run Friday through March 17. To find a cookie booth in their community, residents can download the free mobile application called the “Cookie Locator” and enter their ZIP code.

New this year is the “Five for 5” campaign. Cookie customers may purchase five boxes of cookies to support the five skills girls develop: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. Each customer who purchases five boxes of Girl Scout Cookies will receive a ticket for a chance to win five cases of cookies.

Proceeds from Girl Scout cookie sales support activities for the year, such as funding community-service projects and attending summer camp.

Retreat planned

The Alliance for Substance Abuse Prevention will have a planning retreat to develop a coordinated, community approach to prevent violence and drug activity in Trumbull County from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Sunrise Inn, 510 East Market Street.

Finance chairman Alford L. Novak has called a Warren City Council meeting for 4 p.m. today at the municipal justice building, 141 South St. SE. The agenda for the Feb. 27 meeting and an update on Fire Department Safer grants will be discussed.

Shootings probed

WARREN

Police are investigating shootings Monday afternoon and Friday morning in the city.

Police reported two people were shot at a residence on Idylwild Street Northeast about 2:30 p.m. Monday. Police said the injuries didn’t appear to be life threatening, but they added neither person, one of whom was shot in the leg, was cooperating with authorities in the investigation.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old West Park Drive Southwest man was treated at ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital after being shot at a Garden Street Northwest home at 7:02 a.m. Friday.

Police said the case had been assigned to a detective, but the detective didn’t return phone calls Monday regarding the investigation for additional information.

Cleanup scheduled

A spring cleanup will take place at St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Villa Maria Road, on March 18. All Christmas decorations should be removed from memorials before that date. Any remaining decorations will be discarded.
