WOMEN’S HISTORY MONTH | Events at YSU

March is Women’s History Month, and Youngstown State University is offering several free events. Parking for the events is available in the Lincoln Deck and M24 along Fifth Avenue next to McDonald’s. March 8 at 2 p.m.: Student Diversity and the Center for International Studies and Programs are co-sponsoring a coffee hour followed by the film “Women Hold Up Half the Sky” at the YWCA on Rayen Avenue.

March 19 at 7 p.m.: “Miss Representation,” an award-winning documentary that explores the media’s misrepresentation of women in power, will be shown in the Jones Room in Kilcawley Center on campus.

March 21 at 7 p.m.: Marge Piercy, author of the New York Times best seller “Gone to Soldiers,” will have a poetry and fiction reading at McKay Auditorium in Beeghly Hall. Piercy is the author of 17 novels including “He, She and It,” which received the Arthur C. Clark Award for best science fiction.

March 22 at noon: There will be a panel discussion titled “Women Against Violence Everywhere” in the Jones Room in the Kilcawley Center. Malinda Gavins from Sojourner House Domestic Violence Services, Lynn Bilal from the Rape Crisis and Counseling Center, and Johanna Slivinske from the YSU Department of Social Work and PsyCare will participate.

March 26 at 7 p.m.: The film “Too Fast to Be a Woman?” explores gender issues surrounding the winner of the 800-meter World Championship race in 2009 will be shown at the Jones Room in the Kilcawley Center. Following the film, there will be a panel discussion with YSU track coach Katrina Brumfield, YSU political science Professor Cryshanna Jackson and YSUnity’s Brian Wells.

March 27 at 11 a.m.: Eva Rus, a Fulbright scholar whose research focuses on contemporary feminist autobiographical practice and body representation, will have a lecture in the Gallery Room in the Kilcawley Center. The presentation, “Thank God There’s Silvio,” will concentrate on the role of Italy’s former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi in contributing to the overexposure of media images of sexually subservient and decorative feminine types.

March 29 at 5 p.m.: Midwife Rachel Sieman, Ob-Gyn Joni Canby and Karen Kotrba, author of a collection of poems about nurse-midwives from the early 20th century, will discuss issues related to maternity and early motherhood in the Gallery Room in Kilcawley Center.
