Character actor Jim Backus, who played Thurston Howell III on “Gilligan’s Island” and voiced the cartoon character Mr. Magoo, is born in Cleveland.

1963: The U.S. Supreme Court, in Edwards v. South Carolina, upholds 8-1 the right of civil rights demonstrators to peacefully protest outside the South Carolina State House.

1991: During the Persian Gulf War, 28 Americans are killed when an Iraqi Scud missile hits a U.S. barracks in Dhahran, Saudi Arabia.

1988: The badly burned body of a man is found in the trunk of a burning car in a field off Bell-Wick Road in Hubbard Township.

Owners of the Boardroom, a restaurant that closed at 35 S. Phelps St. downtown, say thieves have emptied the place, taking 26 tables, 66 chairs, six booths, a dishwasher, range and deep-frier.

A good Samaritan, John Dyke, 28, of Rogers is killed instantly when struck by a car in Route 7 south of Rogers while carrying a can of gasoline to a car that was out of fuel.

1938: A fist fight between Sen. J. Ralph Seidner of Youngstown, chairman of the Ohio Senate’s graft-hunting committee, and Warwick Rowland, a Columbus attorney, throws the hearing into an uproar. Rowland is cited for contempt.
