The Ohio Department of Transportation will close Elm Street between Saranac Avenue and Tod Lane to vehicular traffic on March 4 for a $2.3 million project to replace the Elm Street Bridge.

The project will keep that North Side street closed to motorists through mid-November, according to an ODOT statement.

Students on 36 teams from high schools throughout Mahoning and Trumbull counties will participate in the sixth annual Mahoning Valley Miniature Bridge Building Competition from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the Chestnut Room of Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University.

The competition has been organized and supported since 2008 by the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at YSU, the Mahoning County Engineer’s Office, the Trumbull County Engineer’s Office and MS Consultants Inc.

The event involves the design and construction of a balsa-wood bridge, followed by load testing until failure. The goal of the competition is to promote civil engineering as a career choice to students.

Free workshop

North Lima

Dr. Joseph Pederzolli of EyeCare and Vision Therapy Center, 11995 South Ave., will host a free community workshop for professionals working with people with learning disabilities from 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 6.

This workshop is for area professionals who work with children, adolescents or adults who suffer from learning disabilities, sensory deficits, behavior difficulties, or other conditions that restrict learning.

Participants will have the opportunity to meet and hear what other area professionals, educators and involved parents are developing. Also, participants will have time to meet others who can form an interdisciplinary team to help patients.
