1803: In its Marbury v. Madison decision, the Supreme Court establishes judicial review of the constitutionality of statutes.

1868: The U.S. House impeaches President Andrew Johnson following his attempted dismissal of Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton; Johnson is later acquitted by the Senate.

1912: The American Jewish women’s organization Hadassah is founded in New York City.

1938: The first nylon bristle toothbrush, manufactured by DuPont under the name “Dr. West’s Miracle Toothbrush,” goes on sale. (Previously, toothbrush bristles were made from animal hair.)

1942: The SS Struma, a charter ship attempting to carry Jewish refugees from Romania to Palestine during World War II, is torpedoed by a Soviet submarine; all but one of the 769 refugees perished.

1961: The Federal Communications Commission authorizes the nation’s first full-scale trial of pay television in Hartford, Conn.

1988: Former Youngstown Councilman George M. McKelvey receives the Mahoning County Democratic Party endorsement for county treasurer over Michael R. Pope who is seeking his fifth term.

US. Rep. James A. Traficant Jr. is barred from the Democratic Party presidential ballot in Ohio’s 6th Congressional District because his petitions are said to contain false signatures.

1973: Youngstown Mayor Jack C. Hunter says the city has been told it could face a fine of up to $770,000 if draining Lake Milton were to kill an estimated 300,000 fish. He suggests the Youngstown Park and Recreation Commission increase the quantity of water being retained in Lake Milton from 1.5 billion to 2 billion gallons to permit greater living room for the fish impounded there.

The Rev. Peter J. Faini, pastor of St. Anthony of Padua Church, marks 25 years of service at the parish.

1963: Growth of automation has permanently dried up the jobs of at least 7,000 or 8,000 Youngstown district steel jobs, writes George R. Reiss, Vindicator industrial editor.

The Trumbull County Medical Center honors Dr. Robert L. Thomas of Kinsman for practicing medicine continuously for over 50 years.

1938: Three people are killed and seven injured in two auto-truck accidents on Youngstown-Akron Road and Warren-Newton Falls Road. Among the dead are Mrs. Stephen Harvilla, 51, and her grandson, Jackie Patton, 9 months.

Youngstown planning engineer Paul Boucherle says a new theater costing $75,000 will be built at Glenwood and Brentwood avenues.
