Program teaches tree identification

Munnell Run Farm, 753 Greenville Road, will offer a winter tree- identification program from 1 to 3 p.m. March 9.
The event will offer strategies to determine 20 common Pennsylvania conifers and deciduous trees, using simple observation techniques. The majority of the program will be spent outdoors, and guests are asked to dress appropriately.
Registration is required by March 7; call 724-662-2242 and ask for Jacqueline or Chris.
A nominal fee of $5 will go toward future environmental-education programs.

Gardening workshop
Beaver, Pa.
The Penn State Master Gardeners of Beaver County will present the 2013 Smart Gardening Workshop from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 9 at the Community College of Beaver County, 1000 Third St., Suite No. 3. Registration will begin at 8 a.m.
Topics and speakers include: “Cool Tools and Other Stuff for Gardeners,” by Steve Piskor; “Shady Spaces, Exciting Places!” by Linda Kramer; “Treasures from our Grandparents’ Gardens: Heirloom Seeds,” by Emily Stevenson and “A Garden in a Nutshell: Container Gardening,” by Gwen Lutz.
Registration is due by Thursday. The cost is $45 for those pre-registered and $55 for walk-in guests. The fee includes continental breakfast, beverages, lunch, speakers and prizes.

Debate tournament
The Ohio High School Speech League’s State Speech and Debate Tournament takes place in the Youngstown District from Thursday through Saturday.
Boardman and Canfield high schools are co-hosting the event.
Registration and coaches’ meetings begin Thursday at Boardman High School, 7777 Glenwood Ave. The opening assembly for all student qualifiers, coaches and judges takes place at Boardman High School’s Performing Arts Center at 1:30 p.m. Friday.
Three new coaches from the state also will be inducted into the state Hall of Fame at that assembly. Competition begins Friday evening at both Boardman and Canfield high schools and continue through Saturday evening. The final rounds and awards ceremony will take place at Canfield High School, 100 Cardinal Drive, at 7:30 p.m.
