Submit services for Holy Week, Easter

The Vindicator will publish a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Palm Sunday, March 24; Maundy/Holy Thursday, March 28; Good Friday, March 29; Holy Saturday, March 30; and Easter, March 31.

The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. March 20. Publication will be March 23.

Information should include the denomination and name of the church, address, city or suburb, the day, time, type of service, your name and a phone number for verification.

Catholic evangelist

Dan DeMatte, a Catholic evangelist, will speak at 7 p.m. March 3 at St. Charles Borromeo Church, 7345 Westview Drive. He is a youth minister, national speaker and retreat leader and program director for a Catholic youth summer camp.

Men and Women United for Life is sponsoring the free event.

There will be a book signing by DeMatte. Morning Star will provide music. Pro-life groups will have information available. A reception will follow.

On evangelization

Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, 618 Ohio Ave., will sponsor a program by the Rev. James Walker on “The Three Touchstones of Evangelization: Our Attitude, Personal Presence, and the Activities of Our Lives.” Sessions will be from 7 to 8 p.m. March 3-5 at the church.

Father Walker is pastor of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Parish in Warren.

A free-will offering will be taken. Refreshments will follow.

Women’s Day

Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 718 Albert St., will observe its annual Women’s Day program at 11 a.m. Sunday.

Speaker will be Hope Gibson of Painesville, Ohio. Carol Hewlett is chairwoman. A fellowship dinner will follow the service.

Lecture planned

The Society of St. John Chrysostom, Youngstown-Warren Chapter, will present a free lecture on “Cosmic Renewal and Change of Heart: The Function of Sacred Space in Orthodox Worship,” at 2 p.m. March 9 at McDonough Museum of Art auditorium, 525 Wick Ave.

Speaker will be Archpriest Michael Butler, pastor of St. Innocent Orthodox Church in Olmstead Falls, Ohio, and adjunct professor of theology at Baldwin- Wallace University.

The adult choir of Mount Gilead Baptist Church, 2821 Hillman St., will present a “tag team” of ministers offering their interpretation of that “big little word of but” at 4 p.m. Sunday.

Speakers will be Joyce Boudrey of Union Baptist Church, Edward Korneagay of Elizabeth Baptist Church, Faye Wallace of United Faith Fellowship, Marlana Martin of Genesis New Beginning Ministry, Dennis Griffin of Tabernacle Baptist Church, Byron Armout of Holy Trinity Baptist and Randy Ballard of Commandment Keepers.

The Rev. Clifford Kimbrough is pastor; Linda McCrae, choir president; and Edna Stevens-Hamlette, program coordinator.

World Day of Prayer

World Day of Prayer will be observed Friday in the Valley at different sites.

This year’s program was written by French women. The theme is “I Was a Stranger and You Welcomed Me.”

Programs are scheduled at 11 a.m. at St. Michael Church, 300 N. Broad St., Canfield, and 2 p.m. in the Gathering Space at Park Vista, Fifth Ave., Youngstown.

Southington United Methodist Church, state Route 305, will conduct a praise and worship service at 7 p.m. today. Casual dress suggested; refreshments will follow the service.

Monthly series

Villa Maria Spirituality and Education Center will continue its Coffee & Contemplation monthly series of morning seminars with “Deepening Our Lenten Journey.”

Matt Abramowski, program director for the center, will present the program scheduled from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. March 5.

The male chorus of New Bethel Baptist Church, 1507 Hillman St., will present a musical celebration at 5 p.m. Sunday.

Male choruses of Mount Zion Baptist, Greater Friendship Baptist, Elizabeth Baptist, Shiloh Baptist, Tabernacle Baptist, Antioch Baptist, Phillips Chapel Christian Methodist Episcopal, Mount Olive Baptist and New Bethel churches will sing.

Sons of Davis and Sons of Bethel also will perform.

The theme is “Let Your Light So Shine” based on a passage from Matthew 5:16.

Price Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church, 920 Dryden Ave., will celebrate its 49th anniversary at its current location and 135th year since its founding this weekend.

The celebration will be at 11 a.m. Sunday with guest pastor, Dr. Valerie Everett-Tate, a native of Youngstown, who is the first female chaplain and director of religious life at Clark Atlanta University. Her first book is “You Will Make It Through the Night, It’s Morning.”
