Mancini, Cordova rolling in district wrestling

Boardman senior wrestler Nick Mancini is well on his way to his third straight state meet after the first day of the Division I district competition at Mentor High School.

Mancini won two matches Friday at 113 pounds to advance to the championship semifinals. He is joined there by teammate and fellow senior Joe Cordova who won his two matches in the 182-pound class.

Mancini, who claimed the sectional title last week at Austintown Fitch, defeated Andrew Herron of North Royalton, 17-1, then beat Jason Spencer of Perry, 3-1. The two wins improved Mancini’s record this sesaon to 43-2.

Cordova topped Clay Haverfield of Hoover, 13-3, in the first round, then stopped Justin Halaska of Parma, 8-3, to reach the semifinal round. Cordova improved to 31-6 on the season.

Three other area wrestlers won first-round matches Friday before losing in the quarterfinal round. Austintown Fitch juniors Zach Mackall (145 pounds) and Camran Rezapourian (170), and Boardman senior Justin Humphreys (220) all posted initial wins before dropping to the consolation bracket.

Mackall is now 41-11 on the season, Rezapourian is 40-13 and Humphreys is 13-7.

Wrestling resumes today at 9 a.m. with the consolation rounds. The semifinal rounds will be wrestled at 12:30 p.m. and the finals are slated to start at 7
