Agape Assembly Church, 426 Nevada Ave. SW, will sponsor a “Finish Strong” school supply giveaway at 1 p.m. Sunday for students in the Warren area.

The giveaway is designed to replenish basic school items to promote strong academic performance in the final months of the school year.

All supplies are provided by the church, but the community is welcome to donate monetarily or materially to the effort. Bags will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis while supplies last.

Mobbing cafe today

The Youngstown Cash Mob is mobbing Santa Fe “The Southwestern Cafe” from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. today. The Youngstown-based group mobs small businesses in the city to promote local shopping.

This is its first anniversary. The group chooses locations by Facebook nominations and then voting by members.

Santa Fe is located at 2626 Mahoning Ave. across from Mahoning Valley Lanes. It’s been open less than three months.

Practice ACT at the Y

The Davis Family YMCA has partnered with Sylvan Learning Center of Boardman to offer high school students an ACT practice test at the Davis Y.

The test will be from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. March 2 and is available to all college-bound juniors and seniors.

Bomb squad called

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Police Department Bomb Squad was busy Friday morning checking an unmarked suitcase left near the 7th District Court of Appeals building downtown.

Someone left the black suitcase on West Federal Street near Hazel Street early this morning. The unmarked baggage prompted members of the bomb squad to come out, scan and process the bag for explosives.

By 10:45 a.m. members of the bomb squad had determined the suitcase contained only abandoned clothes and nothing explosive.

Teen summit today

Farrell, Pa.

The Shenango Valley Teen Summit will take place at noon today at Valley Baptist Church, 500 Sharon-New Castle Road.

Teens from the Shenango Valley will gather at the church for the summit titled “Hear Me Now,” featuring Marlon Jackson, a Sharon native and former player for the Philadelphia Eagles, and Mike Adams, a Farrell native and current starter for the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Students from Farrell, Kennedy Catholic, Sharpsville, Mercer, West Middlesex, and Lincoln Park Performing Arts schools will form a teen panel for an open-mic session encouraging dialogue about current issues impacting their lives and susceptibility to peer pressure.

Support professionals from clergy, law enforcement, social services and many community agencies will be available to discuss facilitating violence intervention, promoting self-empowerment, and developing leadership and coping skills.
