YOUNGSTOWN

Police have identified the body of a man found dead along Salt Springs Road early today, but as of late Friday night they did not release his name pending notification of family.

A Youngstown police officer on patrol at about 8 a.m. noticed a car sitting far off the roadway along Salt Springs Road. When the officer went to check the car, he found the body of a 91-year-old man not far from where the car was parked.

Detective Sgt. Daryl Martin said the deceased man was reported missing from Austintown on Tuesday. He said police do not suspect foul play in his death.

Martin said police believe the man drove off the road sometime around the time he was reported missing then became disoriented. He said detectives were able to see where the man walked back and forth along the wooded area before collapsing where he was found.

“He must have gotten lost and went right over the bend along the street there. We could see where he left his car and was trying to walk out. He even locked his doors when he walked away. It’s a natural v alley and really wooded in that area,” he said.

A report from Austintown Police Department shows the report made about the elderly man missing, but does not include his name.
