Holy Family School hosted its annual student appreciation skate at Youngstown Skate Feb. 1 to end National Catholic Schools Week. Students spent about two hours out of their school day climbing through an obstacle course, eating snacks and skating.

“Usually, we have our student appreciation skate at the Ice Zone, but this year we got to do something different,” said Shelly Barton, president of the Home and School Alliance, the parent organization that put on the event. “All the funds to have this event came from the Home and School Alliance. We have a fundraiser every year and it allows us to do this and our other activities throughout the year. This year’s fundraiser will take place on March 23.”

Even though the student appreciation skate was at a different location, students and parents still enjoyed the day to relax and have some fun.

“This is our first year coming to the skate and my son’s first time in a skating rink,” said Carla Bettross. “We really love it. My son is having so much fun and I really think it’s great that they do this every year to end Catholic Schools Week.”
