UPDATE: Victim, suspects identified in shooting at fringe of YSU campus today

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Brittany N. Johnson, 23, of Bedford Heights, a student at Youngstown State University, remains in stable condition tonight at St. Elizabeth Health Center today after being hit by gunfire while riding in a car on Pennsylvania Avenue near campus early today.

She and two other women were pulling up to an apartment at the corner of Pennsylvania and Madison avenues, across the street from YSU’s Lyden House residence hall, when they heard gunfire and pulled away to avoid a gunman.

Johnson, a rear-seat passenger, was hit by a shot and driven to the hospital.

Police arrested Sylean Wilson, 19, of Pittsburgh, after he ran to that same apartment building with a Youngstown police officer following him. The officer witnessed some of the gunfire, and a video of the end of the confrontation was posted on You Tube.

Wilson is in the Mahoning County jail, charged with felonious assault, while Rashaad Lewis, 19, also from Pittsburgh, is charged with obstructing officials business, police say, because he held the door open for Wilson and then shut it when the officer got there.
