GREEN BAY, Wis.

Cold spells late in the first half and early in the second doomed the Youngstown State women’s basketball team against Horizon League-leading Green Bay on Saturday.

The Phoenix held the Penguins without a field goal for the final 7:51 of the first half and used a 17-7 run in the first six minutes of the second half and cruised to a 60-46 victory at the Kress Events Center.

It was Green Bay’s 16th consecutive victory. The Phoenix are now 21-2 and 11-0 in league play.

The Phoenix now holds a three-game lead atop the conference standings with five games remaining.

Sarah Eichler had 15 points on 7-for-10 shooting to lead Green Bay.

YSU’s Brandi Brown scored a game-high 20 points, Liz Hornberger had 11, and Shar’Rae Davis added 10. Brown battled foul trouble for much of the game.

The Penguins saw their six-game winning streak stopped with the loss and dropped to 17-6 overall and 7-3 in the Horizon League. The Penguins are now tied with Detroit for second place.

Green Bay led by as many as 10 early in the first half, but YSU scored the next 11 points and led 21-20 with 7:51 on the clock. The Penguins did not make a field goal the rest of the period but still trailed just 30-25 at halftime.

The Phoenix then went on a 17-7 run in the first six minutes of the second half to go up 47-32. YSU got no closer than 12 the rest of the way.

Youngstown State returns home to host Cleveland State on Thursday at 7:05 p.m.
