YOUNGSTOWN
Bond was set at $1 million at the video arraignment of a 25-year-old man charged with the killing of his uncle.
Magistrate Anthony Sertick of Youngstown Municipal Court set the high bond Friday for Emmett Perkins IV, of West Princeton Avenue, at the request of Kathleen Thompson, an assistant city prosecutor.
Perkins’ prior criminal record includes felonious assault, domestic violence, endangering children and misdemeanor assault, Thompson said.
Perkins was arrested Wednesday afternoon in Akron in the Tuesday shooting death of 28-year-old Frank Whitted.
The Mahoning County Coroner’s Office ruled the death a homicide and determined that Whitted died of a single gunshot wound to the chest after being shot at 1:34 a.m. Tuesday at a home on West Princeton Avenue on Youngstown’s South Side.
Whitted’s 2-year-old son and a woman were in the house at the time of the shooting but not injured. Police placed the child in the care of an aunt.
Police believe the shooting followed an argument between Perkins and Whitted, but they aren’t speculating on the subject of the argument.
Perkins, who put his head down and cried uncontrollably during the video arraignment from county jail, told the magistrate his only income was $8.25 per hour in wages, and that he owns no real estate or motor vehicles and has no checking or savings account.
Magistrate Sertick said he’d appoint a lawyer to represent Perkins, who is scheduled for a preliminary hearing at 1:30 p.m. Friday before Judge Robert Milich.
