Sixth- and eighth-grade students at St. Joseph Immaculate Heart of Mary School participated in a science and design fair at their school Jan. 30.
Students spent months working on their projects for the science and design fair. Projects included a presentation to judges that included information on the purpose of the experiment, a hypothesis on the outcome of the experiment, materials used, the procedure used to conduct the experiment, and results. This information was also represented on a poster board that included graphs and pictures.
Projects for the design and science fair covered many topics. Some popular topics included batteries and what goes into making batteries work, which bait can catch the most fish, discussing how ancient weapons were designed and used, seeing if exercise improves memory, and more.
Judges at the science and design fair were a combination of professors from Youngstown State University, physicians, and former teachers.
Students who won Superior Awards in the sixth grade at the science and design fair were Nico Andino, Thomas Leskovac, Jarod Day, Mathew Luknis, and Dylan Miskell, while Honorable Mentions went to Kathleen Faloon, Travis Saxtton, Christopher Smith, and Abby Walsh.
Eighth-graders who received Superior Awards were Brianna Bowell, Nora Carlson, Joseph Chepke, Andrew Griffin, Sydney Heinbaugh, and Richard Wolfe, while Bryce Blazek, Carly Koewacich, and Maria Santana were given Honorable Mentions.
All of these students qualify to compete in the Ohio Academy of Sciences District 15 Lake-to-River Science Day at Youngstown State university in March.
