Robinwood Lane tastes some wombat stew

Robinwood Lane Elementary School hosted an assembly with Boardman librarian Karen Saunders for Right to Read Week Feb. 4. Saunders used an active version of “Wombat Stew” by Marcia K. Vaughan to interest students and encourage them to tell stories in different ways.
To tell the story, Saunders assigned character roles to different students and had them read their lines as the story progressed. Students also carried out the actions of the characters in the story, adding random pieces to symbolize the ingredients of the wombat stew. By the time the story reached its end, a bucket filled with papers for mud, feathers, plastic flies, slugs, and other bugs, as well as “gum nuts,” made the wombat stew come to life.
Saunders also gathered student-volunteers to bring the next story, “Sody Sallyratus” by Teri Sloat, to life. “Sody Sallyratus,” which is an older term for baking soda, is the story of an old woman who promises her family biscuits only to realize that she is out of sody sallyratus. She sends her family members out, one-by-one, to fetch the baking soda from the local market, but on the way home they are confronted and eaten by a bear.
At the end of the assembly, Saunders invited all of the students at Robinwood Lane to the Boardman library for the Party Like a President event Feb. 18. The event will include games, prizes, and other fun for students to enjoy on their day off from school. To learn more, visit www.libraryvisit.org.
