Poland librarian Missy Williams led a session to help older school-aged children (second to sixth grade) get more experience with apps at the Poland library Jan. 25.

“The library wanted to provide an option for students in this age group to have something to do at the library every month,” said Williams. “So many of them come here or walk past here after school, we thought they might like to have a program.”

The appy hour also offered a variety of information about different applications students may want to use on their smart phones, computers, or tablets in their free time.

“I wanted to let the kids know that there are other apps out there other than Angry Birds,” said Williams. “Don’t get me wrong, I play Angry Birds, too, but some of these apps can help them with school work. There are plenty of educational apps out there for those who are interested and willing to look for them.”

The public library has also recently jumped on the app bandwagon, getting books out to people in a fresh, new way.

“One of the new things the library is offering is an app called Overdrive for tablets. Basically, it allows you to check ebooks out of the library catalog straight to your tablet. You don’t even have to leave the house. If you need help learning how to use Overdrive, the library usually offers classes once a month for Kindle, Nook, or iPad users,” said Williams.

The public library will be hosting another appy hour for children in this age group soon. For more information, visit the library website at www.libraryvisit.org.
