Middle school wrestlers win EOWL championship

The Canfield Village Middle School seventh and eighth-grade wrestling team won its second straight EOWL team title last weekend during the tournament at Liberty.
Coach Steve DeMaiolo’s squad had four champions on the way to placing 12 wrestlers on the podium. Canfield outpaced Boardman and Austintown for the Division I and overall team crowns.
Capturing titles for the Cardinals were Georgio Poullas, David Crawford, Dominic Gelonese and Tarek Maalouf. Sean Frisbee placed second as the Cardinals sent nine wrestlers into the semifinals. Tanor English and Braxton Madison took third, while Anthony Joseph and Dominic Cooper finished fourth. Placing fifth for Canfield were Zack Bernat, Alex Maxin and Danny Kapalko.
The middle school grapplers were coming off an impressive top 10 performance at the Twinsburg Athletic Boosters Middle School Tournament. Canfield’s Georgio Poullas was named the tournament MVP en route to his 116-pound title. Also placing in that event were David Crawford (third), Dominic Cooper (fourth), Hunter Mersing (fourth) and Dan Kapalko (seventh).
