The Austintown library hosted a snow-themed story time for babies ages 6-23 months-old on Feb. 4, led by librarian Madline Dunchak.
The story time focused on discovering sounds and vocabulary. Dunchak stressed the importance of naming things so children will begin to recognize the meaning of words they hear. The library also offered the tip that parents should use words unfamiliar to their children when reading. They say readers should not replace the words in a book that children might not understand, but rather explain the meaning of the word to them.
During the story time, Dunchak used a bear to demonstrate child participation. She read several books, including “How to Build a Snowman,” which was a touch-and-feel book on building a snowman and the various parts of a snowman, and “Biscuit’s Snowy Day” by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. She also recited rhymes like “The Royal Duke of York” and “Melting Snowman.” Dunchak even used a magnetic chalk board to demonstrate building a snowman, from putting the balls of snow on one another to adding the carrot nose.
