Hubbard council to consider new senior center on Elmwood, Gary

The city will a have public meeting to vote on a zoning change for a potential $7 million joint senior-care facility.
Mayor John Darko said council will vote Tuesday on whether to alter a portion of land along Elmwood and Gary drives from commercial to residential property.
The vote is a result of a joint assisted-living and nursing home to be built in the city. The assisted-living portion of the center would be on commercial property, while the nursing-home site would be on a residential portion of the 8-acre plot.
Darko said two homes on the residential portion also must be demolished before the nursing home can be constructed.
Tim Huber and Joe Cilone of THJC Holdings are funding the project in Hubbard. The two men already own health-care facilities in North Lima, Youngstown and East Liverpool.
Huber said the new facility would be constructed in two phases. The first phase would include the assisted-living center, while the second phase would be construction of the nursing home.
Huber said details on the second phase are being worked out, but the assisted- living home would consist of 42 suites.
He said each suite in the assisted-living facility would be 400 square feet and have a sleeping area, a bathroom, a kitchenette and a living room.
Huber said the first phase is to begin in 30 to 45 days.
He said the company saw a need for a facility in the city.
“There really isn’t a senior-living center in Hubbard, so we wanted to put our dollars here,” he said.
Huber said the connected centers will be called Elmwood Assisted Living and Elmwood Longterm Care.
Tuesday’s meeting will take place in council chambers at 7 p.m.
