Girls indoor track season under way

The Boardman girls indoor track team competed in the Youngstown State University Indoor Meet on Feb. 3.

Distance standout Jordan Grantonic won the 3200-meter run in a career-best time of 11:36.20. That time beat her previous best of 11:48 from earlier in the season. Grantonic is presently ranked third in the state in the event.

Sarina Mauerman was the runner-up in the pole vault with a season best of 9-0, ranking her 22nd in the state. Teammate Giovanna Silvestri placed seventh in the shot put with a toss of 35-7 and ranks her 12th in the state.

Head coach Denise Gorski was impressed with the progress of the girls’ indoor team thus far.

“We have about 35 girls practicing on a fairly-consistent basis. This was our second indoor meet of the season and many of the girls had their season-best performances,” said Gorski.

The 4x800 meter relay team of Brandi Gatte, Heaton O’Hara, Regan O’Hara and Daisy Corso placed fifth with a time of 10:47.8. That time ranks them 13th in the state. The 4x200 meter relay team of Hope Landers, Nikki Hilliard, Morgan Hambrick and Caitlynn Connor ran 1:58.69, placing seventh in the event. Stephanie DeMain made it to the finals of the 60-meter high hurdles, running a season-best time of 10.87 and finishing 11th place.

“Our main goal is to qualify to the Indoor State Championships to be held March 16 at the University of Akron and for the New Balance Indoor Nationals held in New York the second weekend in March,” said Gorski.

The girls will travel to Columbus March 3 for the Arnold Classic held at Ohio State University.
