The Austintown Fitch girls bowling team captured the All-American Conference American Division title by beating Hubbard, 2,547-2,341.

The Falcons’ top performers were Katie Viglio 230-213—443 and Lynette Seebach 211-216—427.

Leading Hubbard’s effort were Brittany Ferrara 249-177—426 and Sarah Wise 203-173—376.

The AAC National girls title went to Lakeview with a win over Girard.

The AAC American boys champ is Fitch which defeated Struthers for the crown,

Also, the AAC National boys division winner is Champion by its win over Liberty.

Canfield diver falls short of state berth

Ally Chiu of Canfield finished in 13th place Thursday in the Division I girls district diving competition at Cleveland State University.

The top seven finishers advanced to the state meet next weekend at Canton.

Girard’s Savannah Teter had qualified on Wednesday for state in Division II.

Also, in boys diving, Corey Butts of Warren Harding placed 12th with 335.8 points. The top seven advance.

Hole-in-one

Lenny Brown of Monaca, Pa. used a wedge to shoot a hole-in-one on the 103-yard, No. 8 at Bedford Trails.

He was playing with Phil Clacko, Al Massullo and Carmen Narducci.

Alexandra ’doing well as can be expected’

LEXINGTON, Ky.

Rachel Alexandra remains in serious but stable condition following surgery related to complications from the birth of her filly.

Doctors at Rood and Riddle Equine Clinic said Thursday that it’s “too early” to determine the prognosis for the 2009 Horse of the Year, adding that they’re monitoring her response to treatment.

Attending surgeon Brett Woodie says that Rachel Alexandra is “doing about as well as can be expected” at this stage of recovery.

After delivering a 140-pound filly by Bernardini Tuesday morning, she developed problems resulting in surgery Wednesday to repair an area in her small colon that was injured during foaling.

Froome leads Tour of Oman, Contador 3rd

MUSCAT, Oman

Tour de France runner-up Christopher Froome has taken the overall lead in the Tour of Oman, after finishing second in the fourth stage on Thursday.

Froome, a Team Sky rider who was 13th overall after the third day, finished 4 seconds behind stage winner Oliver Joaquim Rodriguez of Katusha who won the 90-mile ride from Samail to Jabal Al Akhdhar in 31/2 hours. Two Tour de France winners followed; Cadel Evans of BMC finished 22 seconds back in third while Alberto Contador of Team Saxo came in 27 seconds back in fourth.

With two stages remaining, Froome leads Evans by 24 seconds for the overall lead with Contador another second back.

US drops to No. 32 in rankings after loss

ZURICH

The United States dropped four spots to No. 32 in FIFA’s February rankings after losing a World Cup qualifier at Honduras.

The ranking is the lowest for the Americans since they were 32nd in October. Since reaching a high of No. 4 in April 2006, the Americans have dropped as low as 36th last July and August.

World and European champion Spain leads the rankings and African champion Nigeria moved up 22 places to No. 30 after its victory over Burkina Faso in last weekend’s African Cup of Nations final.
