EHS speaker discusses her African experiences

The Ethnic Heritage Society will present author and educator Dr. Martha I. Bruce for a discussion of her experiences teaching and traveling in Africa at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kravitz’s Delicatessen, 3135 Belmont Ave.

Admission is $5 and includes refreshments.

Bruce will describe how her long-standing interest in Africa led her to visit the continent and pursue teaching opportunities there. From 1976 to 1982, she served as principal lecturer at the Alvan Ikoku College of Education in Nigeria, where she was nominated for a UNESCO literary prize for literacy programs she developed. She is the author of several children’s books that touch on the lives of children in Africa.

Throughout her career, Bruce has worked as a reading specialist, corrections education specialist, occupational therapist, school administrator, library supervisor, college lecturer, and consultant. She is a former teacher and administrator in the Youngstown City Schools. She has traveled to 26 countries and presented papers in nine.
