School bus catches fire; kids safe

GLENVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Dozens of elementary school students had to be evacuated after their bus caught fire on the way to school in central Pennsylvania.

Officials say about 40 students and the driver got out safely after the bus burst into flames in Codorus Township around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday on the way to Friendship Elementary School. There were no injuries.

Southern York County School District Superintendent Thomas Hensley says an alert motorist noticed smoke coming from the back of the bus and pulled ahead to alert the driver, who pulled over and evacuated the children in a field.

After the evacuation, the blaze quickly spread from the rear of the bus to its interior. Another bus arrived to take the children to school.

There’s no word on what caused the fire.
