POLICE CALLS
A summary of recent criminal activity in Liberty and Girard:
LIBERTY
Feb. 5
Theft/drugs: Joseph D. Sosna, 22, of 447 Indiana Ave, Girard, was charged with theft and possession of drug-abuse instruments after a $29 cellphone adapter was stolen from Walmart, 200 Goldie Road. Sosna also had a syringe in his pocket, police said.
Harassment: An East Montrose Street woman found a note on her vehicle from someone who claimed to be watching her. The woman also said she received unwanted calls, 20 at a time, on a few occasions.
Feb. 6
Domestic violence: Stephen D. Baker, 41, of 2250 Logan Hill Drive, Hubbard, was charged with the crime after his wife alleged Baker had grabbed her throat and choked her.
Bad check: A 47-year-old Youngstown man reportedly bought a gold necklace from World Gold & Gemstones, 4684 Belmont Ave., with a $333 check later returned on a closed account. The man also was wanted on bad-check charges from Boardman, Austintown and Youngstown, a report showed.
Feb. 7
Recovered property: A loaded 9 mm semiautomatic handgun was found in the 2700 block of Youngstown-Hubbard Road, though a check revealed the firearm had not been stolen.
Pursuit/drugs: Police chased a driver who refused to pull over after having gone through a stop sign near Logan Way. During the pursuit, the motorist tossed from a window a substance determined to be 4.3 grams of suspected heroin, authorities said.
Theft: A Warren woman in the 4700 block of Ardmore Drive who gave $40 to a 16- or 17-year-old girl to buy a dog reported the teen failed to give her the animal.
Feb. 8
Recovered property: Twenty-seven syringes containing sodium injections were found in a vacant apartment in the 3000 block of Green Acres Drive.
Robbery: An employee with Aldi grocery store, 3497 Belmont Ave., told police a gunman in a black, hooded coat and a multicolored scarf concealing part of his face demanded she place an undisclosed sum of money in a plastic bag before he walked toward Goldie Road.
Feb. 9
Theft: Gerasimos Gianoutsos, 24, of 1207 Buena Vista St. NE, Warren, was charged with stealing candy and soda from a Speedway gas station, 4210 Belmont Ave.
Feb. 10
Breaking and entering: Someone broke a side-door window at USA Gas Mart, 2904 Belmont Ave., before crawling through and taking 10 packs of cigarettes.
Domestic violence: A 16-year-old Girard boy was charged after his mother, of Sampson Drive, alleged the teen had picked her up and tossed her to the ground during an argument related to a cellphone.
Feb. 11
Breaking and entering: Someone entered a foreclosed home in the 1700 block of Lucretia Drive through the front door, then stole $2,500 worth of copper plumbing.
Aggravated menacing: A Goleta Avenue woman told police a man threatened to kill her son if she failed to keep the boy from the caller’s daughter.
GIRARD
Feb. 9
Theft: Fifteen to 20 prescription pills were stolen from a residence in the 30 block of Stambaugh Street.
Harassment: A Dearborn Avenue man reported having received about 26 such calls, many containing profane language as well as threats to beat him up.
Arrest: Officers charged a 15-year-old Girard boy with failure to comply with police after saying the teen, on a four-wheel vehicle, failed to pull over near Interstate 80 and U.S. Route 422 and led them on a pursuit.
Assaults: Two men reportedly each tackled the other during a fight at a West Main Street business.
Assault: Police responded to a fight in the 20 block of West Wilson Avenue and were told a woman apparently had been struck.
Feb. 10
Harassment: An East Main Street man said his former girlfriend has made daily unwanted calls to him, sent him vulgar text messages and shown up at his home unannounced.
Criminal damaging: Someone in the 1100 block of Marie Drive poured sugar into a jet ski’s fuel line, causing $2,500 in damage.
Harassment: A Washington Avenue woman reported a man sent unwanted text messages to her.
Criminal damaging: A car in the 700 block of Washington Avenue was found with a broken driver’s-side mirror. Damage was estimated at $500.
Criminal damaging: Someone in a Chevrolet Impala drove through and damaged portions of several lawns on North Highland, North Ward and Krehl avenues as well as on Moccasin Trail.
Menacing: A North Highland Avenue woman and a friend reported having gotten eight such calls and text messages goading them into a fight.
Feb. 11
Criminal damaging: An apartment in the 400 block of Washington Avenue sustained smoke damage, reportedly after a resident carelessly discarded a cigarette.
