Mourners pay respects to NYC mom killed in Turkey

NEW YORK (AP) — Friends and strangers alike are paying their respects to a New York City mother of two who was killed in Turkey while vacationing alone.

A viewing for Sarai Sierra is being held today at Christian Pentecostal Church on Staten Island. That day also marks the 15th anniversary of Sierra’s engagement to husband Steven.

Family friend Marjorie Ryan says Sierra’s family is devastated.

The 33-year-old’s body was discovered Feb. 2 near Istanbul’s ancient city walls, 12 days after she disappeared. Police say she suffered a fatal blow to the head.

She will be buried Friday.

Sierra traveled to Turkey to explore her photography hobby. A friend who was supposed to join her canceled for financial reasons.

Turkish authorities and the FBI are investigating her death. No arrests have been made.
