Cops: Pocket dial, low battery led right to Ohio burglar
SIDNEY, Ohio
Authorities in Ohio say a pocket-dialing prowler got himself arrested after his cellphone turned informant. Twice.
Investigators say an emergency operator traced an accidental 911 call Tuesday night to a home in Sidney, about 60 miles northwest of Columbus.
Shelby County deputy sheriffs dispatched to check on the house found a window forced open.
They arrested Douglas Wolaver, of Piqua, inside.
The sheriff’s office says Wolaver was found in a bathroom after his phone’s low-battery alert led deputies to his hiding place.
Wolaver is charged with breaking and entering. A phone listing for him was disconnected.
Stella! Ornery dog leads to $1M Idaho lottery win
SALT LAKE CITY
A group of University of Utah workers will split $1 million in lottery winnings, thanks to an ornery little dog named “Stella.”
Twelve years after playing the same set of numbers every month in the Idaho lottery, the group of 33 workers who work on heating and cooling university buildings hit pay dirt when Steve Hughes left his truck running while he went inside a gas station.
When he returned, his miniature pinscher had locked him out by putting her paw on the manual lock. Hughes had planned to buy the ticket elsewhere, but instead his girlfriend bought it there while he tried to pick the lock.
He eventually coached Stella to put her paws on the electronic window button in the back seat, allowing Hughes to get in the car.
Hughes says they will each get about $20,000 after taxes. They buy the tickets in Idaho because Utah has no lottery.
Man acquitted in fight with roommate over stinky feet
AUGUSTA, Ga.
An Augusta man jailed after police said an argument over stinky feet left his roommate with a minor wound has been acquitted.
Authorities said an argument over stinky feet touched off the fight, and prosecutors charged 62-year-old Crawford Jackson with aggravated assault.
The Augusta Chronicle reported that Judge J. David Roper issued the verdict Wednesday, clearing Jackson of the charges.
Jackson’s former roommate, Darryl Harris, testified during the Richmond County Superior Court trial that Jackson poked him in the stomach several times with the blunt end of a pocket knife, breaking the skin, and that Jackson cut his hand.
However, the judge found that the knife was not used as a deadly weapon by Jackson against Harris in the June 11 altercation.
