Bassetti: Bell-Wick to hosting sectionals

The Mahoning-Trumbull sectional bowling tournament is scheduled for Friday at Bell-Wick Bowl.

Twenty-four boys teams and 23 girls teams are schedule to compete, said Fran Miller, sectional tournament manager.

Girls will bowl at 9 a.m. and boys will bowl at 2 p.m.

Six teams (girls and boys) as well as six individuals (girls and boys) from non-qualifying teams will advance to the district tournament at Crest Lanes in Warren. For the district tournament, the girls will bowl at noon on Feb. 23 and the boys will bowl at noon on Feb. 24.

The Northeast district tournament will send five girls teams and individual bowlers from non-qualifying teams, and five boys teams and individuals from non-qualifying teams to the state.

Qualifiers from four different sectionals will converge on Crest. Last year’s NEO district was at Twin-Star Lanes in Kent.

The greatest percentage of state tournament entrants come from northeastern Ohio, said Miller, who is also the Lake County tournament manager and an assistant for the Northeast district tournament and the state tournament.

This year’s state tournament will again be at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl. The dates are March 1 (girls) and March 2 (boys).

“It is expected that this is the last year that all schools will be competing as one division,” Miller said. “We are supposed to break into two divisions next season.”

She said that details on divisional breakdown have yet to be decided.

“The OHSAA will take into consideration suggestions from state rules interpreters as well as the Ohio High School Bowling Coaches Association,” Miller said.

300s

After sitting out the first game, Michael Wagner had a perfect game in Sanko Photography Studio at Holiday, Sanko secretary Tony Renze reported.

299s

A standing 2-pin cost Michelle Starnes a 300 game in Wedgewood Ladies Trio on Jan. 29. She finished with a 662 series. At the time, Starnes had a 169 average.

Corey Bayus missed a perfect game on the last ball but still rolled 280-219-299—798 in Tri-County Classic at Holiday on Feb. 5. Also, Tim Graham bowled his fourth 300 game of the season.

Golf, anyone?

The Camelot Queens League concluded on Feb. 5, when first-half winner Columbiana Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge beat second-half winner McCarthy Systems in a three-game roll-off.

Columbiana Chrysler-Jeep-Dodge took two games, plus total pins, against McCarthy’s, a computer business.

Camelot Queens bowls a 20-week season (10 weeks per half) and wraps up in early February because of members’ wishes to get ready for golf.

“A lot of the girls golf and start early,” said secretary Mary O’Hare. “They’d miss bowling for golf, so we decided to go 20 weeks.”

Things a secretary has to deal with.
