Canfield High School choirs brought the glitz and glamour of Broadway to Canfield when they performed “100 Years of Broadway” Jan. 19.

Under the direction of Kelly Scurich, 160 students from the Concert Choir, Chamber Ensemble and One Octave Higher Ensemble performed medleys of Broadway songs from the past 100 years.

The choirs opened the show with a medley of Broadway musical classics such as “One,” “Give My Regards to Broadway,” “Do Re Mi” and “There’s no Business Like Show Business.” Moving on to Broadway’s early years, the choirs performed a medley of songs such as “Manhattan,” “Button Up Your Overcoat,” “Can’t Help Lovin’ Dat Man” and Hallelujah.”

Several students performed solos or in an ensemble during the program. Soloists included Jonathan Palermo, Richard Jenkins, Zack Davison, Ben Wilson, Maria Kenner, Mary Kate Motolenich, Alice Nicolas, Alanna Holcomb, Mackenzie Blaney, Olivia Roy, Michele Whiteleather, Anne Vallas, Megan Factor, Emily Stedge and Hayley Ward.

Students in ensembles included Kiel Fizet, Richard Jenkins, Dyllan Kupec, Michele Sorice, Zack Davison, Jonathan Palermo, Ben Wilson, Kelly Dahman, Megan Factor, Alanna Holcomb, Maria Kenner, Michele Whiteleather, Hayley Ward, Alice Nicolas, Olivia Roy, Brianna Settle and Emily Stedge.

Narrators were Michele Sorice, Kelly Dahman, Alisha Boykin and Richard Jenkins.

Prior to the performance, the Canfield Choral Boosters sponsored a Backstage at Broadway tasting event in the high school cafeteria. Local caterers and restaurants, such as A La Cart Catering, Ange Netta’s Caf and Bakery, Canfield Bob Evans, Bread Chef, Southern Park Mall Chick Fil A, Culinary Arts Center, Giannios Candy, Canfield Giant Eagle, Canfield Inner Circle, Mocha House, Nicolinni’s Restaurant II, Phoenix Fire Grill and Bar, Smokehouse BBQ and Zenobia, featured local and regional specialties. The caterers and restaurants donated their tasting samples and staffed their tables.

“This event gave the restaurants and caterers a chance to showcase their specialties and provide samples for our guests. We have everything from cupcakes to cheesecakes, pulled pork to brisket and pasta to gourmet sandwiches,” said Marilyn Kenner, co-chair of the event.

Kaleel Brothers donated all paper products and Pecchia Communications compiled and formatted the program for the performance.

The event is the biggest fundraiser of the year for the choirs. Proceeds from the evening go toward music and choir travel expenses.
