BGMS wrestlers excel

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School boys wrestling team competed in the Spartan Duals Tournament on Jan. 29. The Spartans were led by John Fleet who won all of his five matches. Dante Davis won four matches, three by a pin. Nick Leonardo won three matches and Richard Fisher, Matt Maroni and Jared Kirk each had two wins.

BGMS boys win ninth

Boardman Glenwood’s seventh-grade boys basketball team won its ninthgame, beating P. Ross Berry 29-28 on Jan. 29. Holden Lipke, Brian Terlesky and Jarod Wilson led the way with six points each. Noah Falleti added five points, while Antonio Page scored four and Billy Cammack had two points. The boys improved to 9-3 on the season. The BGMS eighth-grade boys basketball team lost a tough game against P. Ross Berry, 38-30, on Jan. 29. The Spartans were led in scoring by Sean Birchfield with nine points. JR Ryan and Gaven Strines had six. Mark Smaldino had three, Bryce Richey, Travis Koontz and Anthony Davanzo each had two points. The Spartans are now 7-5.

BGMS sweeps Berry

The Boardman Glenwood eighth-grade girls basketball team improved to 8-3 on the year. Lauren Pavlansky led all scorers with 10 points. Simone Comer and Aniyuh Spann had seven points each, Maryssa Wagner and Alexis Stutz had four apiece and Taylor Halowell rounded out the scoring with two points.

Comer had eight rebounds, Spann had six and Alaina Hufnagel and Faith Clear each had two.

The seventh-grade girls beat P. Ross Berry, 19-8. Leading scorers were Ashley Clark (six), Cassie Stitt (four), Riley Zawrotuk (four), Carly Amednola (two), Savannah Beule (two) and Casey Zaitzew (one). Contributing with solid defense were Kaylee Davis, Nadine Gabriel, Rachel Hritz and Aniya White.

BGMS wrestlers top Brookfield

The Boardman Glenwood Middle School wrestling team recently split matches against Girard and Brookfield. The team lost a hard-fought match to Girard, 42-39. John Fleet had an impressive 7-5 win over a wrestler with a record of 25-5.

BGMS beat Brookfield, 32-12. Dante Davis and Fleet each won by pin. Matt Maroni and Jacob Mahood each won a match. Julian Ruiz, Richard Fisher, Nick Leonardo, Julian Vargas, Evan Walton, Fleet and Davis each won two matches.

Softball sign-ups set for Austintown league

Austintown girls softball league (slow-pitch) sign-ups, which are open to all Mahoning Valley girls, will be at the Austintown Township hall Feb. 16-17 from noon until 4 p.m.
