Disciples recruitment

The Northeast Ohio Disciples football team has a recruitment/information day on Feb. 9 from noon until 2 p.m.

Since its establishment in 2009, the semi-pro team has won two conference championships and has had 14 players commit to attend a university.

Chandler picked for Honduras soccer game

CHICAGO

Defender Timmy Chandler is among 24 players selected for the United States’ World Cup qualifier at Honduras on Wednesday and is set to make his competitive debut for the Americans.

Chandler is eligible to play for the U.S. and Germany. He has made nine appearances for the Americans but all in exhibition games. He declined to play in the semifinal round of qualifying last year. He is likely to start at right back in place of Steve Cherundolo, sidelined by a knee injury.

Omar Gonzalez, Matt Besler and Brad Evans are among seven players selected Monday from Major League Soccer who appeared in last week’s 0-0 exhibition draw against Canada.

Dominguez begins rehab from fracture

NEW YORK

Jockey Ramon Dominguez has been transferred to a rehabilitation center as he recovers from a skull fracture suffered in a spill at Aqueduct last month.

His wife Sharon issued a statement saying Dominguez was transferred on Wednesday from the New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center in Manhattan to the Burke Rehabilitation Hospital in White Plains, N.Y.

There is no timetable for his release from Burke. Dominguez, injured on Jan. 18, has won the last three Eclipse Awards as the nation’s leading rider.

Pair join forces at ski worlds competition

SCHLADMING, Austria

The Terminator joined the “Herminator” at the Alpine skiing world championships.

Austria-born Arnold Schwarzenegger and skiing great Hermann Maier shared the stage Monday during a rain-drenched opening ceremony.

The championships are in Schladming, which is part of the province where the superstar actor and former California governor grew up. Maier retired in 2009 and was nicknamed “The Herminator” after Schwarzenegger’s “Terminator” movies.

Russian runner Syreva banned for doping

MOSCOW

The Russian track and field federation says European indoor silver medalist Olesya Syreva has been banned for two years for doping.

The ban annuls all her results since March 3, 2011, meaning the 29-year-old Syreva will lose the medal she won for finishing second in the 3,000 meters at the European indoor championships in Paris.
