For the second-consecutive year, Youngstown State University is the only university in the state to receive the Healthy Ohioans-Healthy Worksite Award for its commitment to the health and well-being of its employees.

In all, 35 businesses and organizations received awards. YSU, which received a bronze-level honor, is the only entity in Mahoning, Trumbull or Columbiana counties to earn the award.

In 2012, 46 percent of YSU’s nearly 1,200 employees participated in at least one of the various offerings provided by the university’s Wellness program. Nearly 500 employees took place in health-screening events on campus.

Free income-tax services at YSU

The Lariccia School of Accounting and Finance at Youngstown State University is working with trained business students and professional volunteers to offer the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program.

VITA offers income tax preparation at no charge to local residents and provides hands-on experience to business students at YSU. Income tax preparation is done in computer labs on the first floor of Williamson Hall through April 13.

Williamson Hall is located on 221 N Hazel St. Walk-ins are welcome. To make an appointment or to receive additional information, call 330-941-3084. The services are offered 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturdays beginning this week through April 13, except for March 16 and April 6. A Monday session is planned Feb. 11 from 3:30 to 6 p.m.

Artist applications for summer arts fest

The 15th Annual Summer Festival of the Arts will be at and around Youngstown State University on July 13 and 14.

Artist applications for the juried fine art show are now available, and artists are encouraged to apply by the April 5, 2013, early deadline. Each application must be accompanied by the $20 jury fee. If accepted, the booth fee is $100. More than 80 artists participated in the two-day event last year, which also includes an ethnic festival, jazz concert and multiple family activities.
