Cycling seeks six new Olympic events

AIGLE, Switzerland

The International Cycling Union wants the IOC to add six medal events to the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics program, including the restoration of track points races.

The UCI’s proposal comes amid calls to scrap cycling’s Olympics status after the Lance Armstrong case and criticism of the governing body’s management of anti-doping measures.

The UCI says its management board supports restoring the individual points event, plus introducing BMX freestyle and mountain bike eliminator events. All three would have men’s and women’s races.

Cycling awarded 18 gold medals at last year’s London Games, including 10 track, four road, and two each in BMX and mountain bike.

Gascoigne’s agent says ex-star needs help

LONDON

Paul Gascoigne’s agent says the former England midfielder requires urgent medical help.

The 1990 World Cup star, nicknamed “Gazza,” has been plagued by alcohol and mental-health problems since quitting the game in 2005

Despite receiving treatment in recent years, agent Terry Baker says the 45-year-old Gascoigne has been drinking again, adding on the BBC: “His life is always in danger because he is an alcoholic.”

Gascoigne was pictured in Britain looking unwell at a public event Thursday.

Gascoigne scored 10 goals in 57 matches for England.

Back in form, Vonn aiming for gold

SCHLADMING, Austria

All through her career, Lindsey Vonn has been slowed by injuries at major championships — crashes and concussions; a sliced thumb and bruised shin.

This year, though, she feels as good as ever and the timing couldn’t be better.

“I’m finally coming in healthy,” Vonn said Sunday. “I’m definitely getting ready to get my game face on.”

Next up are the world championships. They begin Tuesday with the women’s super-G, one of the races in which Vonn is the favorite.
