Phantoms rally to capture shootout win over Muskegon

MUSKEGON, MICH.

The Youngstown Phantoms scored on three of their four shootout shots to defeat the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 5-4, on Friday at the LC Walker Arena.

Sam Anas, Austin Cangelosi and Nathan Walker all beat Lumberjacks goaltender Kevin Lindskoug in the shootout. Phantoms goaltender Sean Romeo stopped two of the Lumberjacks’ four shots to earn the win.

Despite outshooting the Lumberjacks 53-34 in regulation and overtime, the Phantoms had to rally, overcoming four one-goal deficits. It was Youngstown’s seventh victory in its past nine games.

After Tyler Heiononen gave Muskegon a 1-0 lead, Phantoms defenseman Ryan Lowney tied the game with assists from Cam Brown and Anas.

Joseph Cox’s unassisted goal gave the Lumberjacks a 2-1 lead late in the first period, but the Phantoms responded with a power-play goal 67 seconds later. Luke Stork scored on assists from Lowney and Cangelosi.

The Lumberjacks scored twice in the second period. After Cox netted his second goal, Ben Foster scored. In between those goals, Alexander Dahl scored on the power play for the Phantoms. Dahl’s goal was set up by James Mazza and Dan Renouf.

In the third period, defenseman Eric Sweetman scored a shorthanded goal that was set up by Cangelosi and Stork.

The Phantoms’ road trip concludes tonight in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, against the RoughRiders.
