Library hosts children’s ping pong event

Boardman library hosted a ping pong day for children of all ages in its meeting room Jan. 12. Dozens of people went to the library to learn how to play the game and to practice their skills.
Ping pong, which is also known as table tennis, is a game in which a single person per side or a team of two per side hits a ball from one side of a net to the other with a bounce on each side of the net before returning the serve. The game has a simple set of rules, making it ideal to teach to the smaller children at the library.
“Ping pong is a fun activity for children at the library. Just like the other story times at the library, we read a book and then did an activity. This activity is more hands-on for the kids and I think they like it,” said Karin Sanders, a librarian at the Boardman library.
There were four tables of different sizes set up in the meeting room for children to play on. Sanders attempted to pair children of similar ages to play against one another, but the older children were also patient in helping their friends learn. If there was any kind of trouble, Sanders was there to show the children how to best hit the ball or to explain the rules.
“The library has some type of active activity like this every month and it’s usually different. It’s an all-age program, just like this ping pong day, which has been a great success with the kids. We had a great turnout and I would love to see another ping pong day at the library,” said Sanders.
