Police chased a man who jumped from the roof of a porch at a South Side home Sunday afternoon to the back of a nearby funeral home, where he was arrested.

Officers were called to a home in the 600 block of West Dewey Avenue about 2:10 p.m.

Police were called by a man who said he was at his home when he heard someone walking around upstairs, and he went to check because he was the only person in the house.

The homeowner told police he saw a second-floor door open and then ran to call 911 and ran outside. He then saw a man, later identified as Robert Manigault, 18, of East Avondale Avenue, trying to break into the back of another house.

Several officers, including one with a police dog arrived and were looking for the suspected burglar when they saw Manigault jump off a porch roof and run down a driveway.

Officers ran after him on foot across Glenwood Avenue and down Pineview Avenue to the J.E. Washington Funeral Home on Glenwood Avenue. He was lying in a basement stairway when officers found him but refused to give himself up.

Officers had to handcuff him and take him away, reports said.

Reports said that the first house officers were called to had a window that would be within reach of someone on top of the porch roof. On the second floor of that home, police found a window that was forced open and a jewelry box that had been rifled through.

A set of keys on Manigault matched an SUV parked behind the Foster Theater. Inside the SUV, police found game consoles, jewelry and cameras that may have been stolen. It was towed for evidence.

Manigault was charged with burglary, attempted burglary, resisting arrest and obstructing official business and taken to the Mahoning County jail.
