Ex-driver Schumacher in critical condition

PARIS

Seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher was in critical condition after undergoing brain surgery following a skiing accident in the French Alps on Sunday, doctors said.

The Grenoble University Hospital Center said the retired racing driver arrived at the clinic in a coma and underwent immediate surgery for a serious head trauma.

It was not clear whether the 44-year-old Schumacher was still in a coma but the hospital statement, which was signed by a neurosurgeon, an anesthesiologist and Marc Penaud, the hospital’s deputy director, said “he remains in a critical condition.”

Schumacher fell while skiing off-piste in Meribel earlier Sunday and hit his head on a rock, according to a statement from the resort. Resort managers said he had been wearing a helmet and was conscious when rescuers first responded to the scene.

Dodgers ‘disappointed’ with Puig after arrest

LOS ANGELES

The Dodgers have told outfielder Yasiel Puig the organization is “very disappointed” with his behavior in the wake of his second arrest this year for reckless driving.

The team issued a statement Sunday that said Puig’s behavior “is a very serious issue to us.” The Dodgers said they would continue to educate the 23-year-old Cuban defector and strive to further develop his growth off the field.

Puig was arrested Saturday in Naples, Fla., after the Florida Highway Patrol clocked him going 110 mph in a 70-mph zone.

Authorities said Puig was arrested and charged with reckless driving and taken to the Collier County Jail for processing. Puig lives in the Miami area during the offseason.

Michigan falls in BW-3 Bowl

TEMPE, Ariz.

Jake Waters threw for 271 yards and connected with Tyler Lockett on three touchdowns, leading Kansas State to its first bowl victory in 11 years, 31-14 over Michigan in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl on Saturday night.

Kansas State (8-5) scored on its first three possessions, all touchdown passes from Waters to Lockett, and its defense dominated Michigan to end a five-game bowl losing streak.

Lockett set a school record with 10 catches for 116 yards and Waters completed 21 of 27 passes, sending the Wildcats to their first bowl victory since the 2002 Holiday Bowl.

Weidman defends belt when Silva injures leg

LAS VEGAS

Chris Weidman defended his UFC middleweight title when Anderson Silva broke his left leg on a kick in the second round, ending UFC 168 with a horrific injury Saturday night.

Weidman (11-0) quietly celebrated his victory while medical personnel tended to Silva (33-6), whose left shin bent grotesquely while landing a kick on Weidman’s left leg 1:16 into the round.

Weidman, who earned his belt with an upset victory over the long-reigning champion in July, also dominated the first round of the rematch.

“I did work on checking kicks,” Weidman said. “I figured if I [caught] him on my knee, it could really hurt him. Crazy how this happened.”

UCF hires Ferraro as defensive coordinator

ORLANDO, Fla.

Central Florida has hired longtime NFL assistant Paul Ferraro to be defensive coordinator next season.

Ferraro has been defensive coordinator at Maine in the FCS the last two year. He worked with the Panthers, Vikings and Rams from 2005-11, and was an assistant for UCF coach George O’Leary at Georgia Tech from 1995-01.
