911 caller describes fatal bank robbery in Phoenix

PHOENIX (AP) — A 911 caller who alerted authorities that a masked man had run into a Phoenix bank calmly described how police fatally shot the suspect as he exited the building.

The 911 call and surveillance footage taken during the robbery were released today as investigators tried to piece together how the suspect who was connected to two bank robberies in the Southeast had ended up in Phoenix.

Mario Edward Garnett, 40, was fatally wounded Saturday as he fired a pistol at a police officer while trying to flee the bank in west Phoenix.

Three minutes into the call, the man who called 911 said the masked man exited the bank and fired a .45-caliber pistol at an officer who had just arrived.

Ten seconds later, he says the robber was on the ground and not moving.
