Streets closed for First Night

YOUNGSTOWN

As a result of First Night Youngstown festivities from 4:30 p.m. to midnight Tuesday, these downtown streets will be closed: East Federal Street from Central Square to Champion Street; West Federal Street from Central Square to Phelps Street; Market Street from Central Square to Boardman Street; Wick Avenue from Central Square to Commerce Street; and Champion from Boardman to Commerce.

First Day Hike at Jennings Wed.

SLIPPERY ROCK, PA.

Jennings Environmental Education Center, 2951 Prospect Road, will host a “First Day” hike at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The brisk, moderately difficult walk will be led by Jennings staff and will cover about 2 miles on Jennings’ longest trail, Oakwoods. Guests will traverse a varied terrain and visit several different habitats, including prairie, forest and a beaver meadow wetland.

First Day Hikes are sponsored by state park systems throughout the country to highlight the role of these parks in providing year-round recreation and promoting healthy lifestyles. It is a free program. Pre-registration is not required. Meet in the prairie trails area parking lot in time to begin at 1 p.m. Dress for the weather, with layers for comfort, warmth and to stay dry, and bring your own water bottle and snacks.

New officers elected for United Way

YOUNGSTOWN

Mike McBride of Goodwill Industries was recently elected 2014 president of the Youngstown/Mahoning Valley United Way Directors’ Association. The association is made up of funded UW programs.

Other officers elected are Sandy Kessler, Jewish Community Center, vice president; Juanita Pasley, United Methodist Community Center, secretary; and Karen Conklin, director, American Red Cross of the Mahoning Valley, treasurer.

The Animal Welfare League recently received a $25,000 donation presented by Steven Friedman on behalf of The Morris and Phyllis Friedman Foundation.

Others involved in the presentation ceremony were Atty. Ned Gold, Ali Patterson, Caryn Covelli, Dr. John Owen, Barbara and Mary Busko, Margie McCummins and Ellen Parker.

Veterans office closed Tues., Wed.

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission at Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave., Suite 100, has canceled its board meeting for Wednesday.

The commission office will close at noon Tuesday and be closed Wednesday. The office reopens at 8 a.m. Thursday.
