Ohio man charged in nephew's Christmas Day slaying
RAVENNA, Ohio (AP) — A northeast Ohio man is due in court after being accused of fatally shooting his nephew on Christmas Day.
Portage County sheriff’s deputies said 48-year-old Joseph E. Thornton was scheduled to appear in court this afternoon. He is charged with murder in the shooting death of his nephew, 39-year-old Jason Canan. The two men lived together in a mobile home in Windham Township near Ravenna.
The shooting was reported at about 10:50 p.m. Wednesday.
Portage County Sheriff David W. Doak said the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is assisting. He declined to release any information about a possible motive.
He said prosecutors will seek a grand jury indictment.
