South Avenue crash leaves woman dead

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Police investigated a fatal crash Christmas Eve after a woman was struck by a pickup truck on South Avenue.

Police say the woman appeared to be in her 40s. Her identity was unknown as of press time Tuesday night.

Investigators were at the scene interviewing witnesses and the person driving the truck.

That part of South Avenue by Dewey Avenue was closed during the investigation.

Police say the truck hit the woman while driving north on South Avenue toward downtown Youngstown just after 7 p.m.

The woman apparently fell or walked in the street after she talked with someone in a van on South Avenue, police say.

Police say the truck driver did not see the woman in the street.

Ambulance workers and multiple police were at the accident.

More information will be available once the investigation is complete.
