Man found in driveway, juvenile shot in foot

Two wounded in separate shootings

Police say two people were shot Tuesday in separate parts of town, about four and half hours apart.

Damien L. Patterson, 35, was shot about 9:30 a.m. while he was shoveling snow in the driveway of his 160 W. LaClede Ave. home on the South Side.

Patterson told police the passenger in a black Chevrolet HHR fired several rounds at him from a semiautomatic handgun and he was shot in the stomach. His fiancee heard the gunfire, looked out an upstairs window and saw the HHR heading west up LaClede Avenue to Hillman Avenue, reports said.

Officers on the scene said several shots were fired and one of them hit the home but the people inside were not injured. Among those inside was a small child.

A neighboring house at 164 W. LaClede Ave. was also hit by a bullet but no one there was injured.

Officers found three spent 9mm shell casings in the snow in the street in front of the house.

A neighbor across the street, Clarence Barnes, said he did not see the shooting but that he heard several shots and then a woman screaming and a saw man lying in the driveway.

Barnes said his section of the street is quiet and there is usually not much trouble.

Police said later in the day Patterson was listed in stable condition at St. Elizabeth Health Center.

About 2 p.m., police got a call from Humility of Mary Health Partners Police at St. Elizabeth that a 9-year-old had been shot in the foot in the area around Borts Park.

Police searched Oakwood Avenue for any evidence of a crime scene from the park to the ramp heading to Interstate 680 but could find no evidence of a crime, although they were expected to return. They also searched the other side of the park on Connecticut Avenue but could not find anything.

The juvenile’s name was not available late Tuesday afternoon but his wound was described as non-life threatening by a police spokesman.
