Woman’s body found in Girard

GIRARD

About 8:30 a.m. Sunday, members of the U.S. Marshals Task Force Services found a body in a pond on Mahoning Country Club property that tentatively was identified as Thelma Brown, 87. The Alzheimer’s patient had been missing from her residence since early Saturday.

The body was taken to the Trumbull County Coroner’s office for further investigation. At this time, no foul play is suspected.

Brown last was seen about 2 a.m. Saturday by her daughter-in-law and caregiver.

In the search for Brown, the Girard Police Department was assisted by the Liberty and Hubbard Township police departments, Girard Fire Department, Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ohio Special Response Team.

Youngstown fires

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Fire Department responded to two fire calls Saturday.

At 1:19 p.m. , firefighters responded to the intersection of Clifton and Funston streets, where smoke was coming from a vacant two-story frame structure.

The fire burned a hole in a second-floor bedroom. No injuries were reported.

At 4:11 p.m., the department responded to a fully involved car fire in the 1600 block of Jacobs Road. The heat from the fire caused damaged to vinyl siding on the residence. No one was home at the time of the fire.

Training for clergy

YOUNGSTOWN

Training for clergy and police is planned from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 3 at D&E Counseling Center, 142 Javit Court.

Anita Williams, certified youth mental-health first-aid instructor, will conduct the session. The free program is supported by the Mahoning County Mental Health Board.

Artwork online

Youngstown

Sean Butler, Cardinal Mooney High School art teacher, reported that students have teamed up with Artsonia, an online kids art museum, to display the students’ artwork.

Visitors can browse the artwork in the school gallery by grade level, or by specific exhibits.

Mooney students join thousands of students from more than 130 countries whose artwork is showcased on Artsonia.

Utility assistance

WARREN

Trumbull Community Action Program, 1230 Palmyra Road SW, will provide emergency utility-bill assistance under the Winter Crisis Program through March 31.

The program can help eligible households avoid utility disconnection, restore disconnected service, establish new service and purchase fuel oil, propane, coal and wood.

Twenty-five walk-in customers will be seen every day from 7:30 a.m. to noon. Twenty-five walk-in customers will be seen in the afternoon on Mondays only.
