Area teams motor through robotics event

AUSTINTOWN

Austintown Schools’ Biohazard won the Gracious Professionalism Award, and the Sand Devils, another Austintown robotics team, won the Strategy and Innovation Award at a competition earlier this month.

The theme of the competition was Nature’s Fury. The teams were instructed to identify a natural disaster, identify a location that is at risk from the disaster, and devise a plan to help prepare for these situations. The teams had to give presentations and participate in question-and-answer sessions with judges. The teams’ robots also had to show off their abilities to complete missions and maneuver through obstacles on a 4-by-8-foot table.

Biohazard team members include Jackson Belknap, Anthony Delbene, Michael Spear, Alex Giovannone, Jeremy Selby, Zachary Easton, Nathan Spalding and Isaac Robbins.

Sand Devils team members include Bryan Griffiths, Seth Welch, Joseph Jadue, Matthew Land, Rashaan Nelson and Liam Carver.

The Biohazard team will be joining the Austintown Mad Scientists for the Jan. 11 District FLL Event at Austintown Middle School.

Westminster professor serves as guest conductor

NEW WILMINGTON, PA.

Robin Lind, Westminster College associate professor of music and director of choral activities, was guest conductor for two choral festivals and adjudicated at a college concerto competition.

In November, Lind was the guest conductor for the Ohio Music Education Association District 5 Honors Choir, which consisted of about 100 singers. Lind selected four songs that the singers rehearsed and presented at a concert for family and friends at Stambaugh Auditorium in Youngstown.

Lind also was a guest conductor for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association District 1 Honors Women’s Choir. The festival was a two-day event that took place at Seton Hill University in Greensburg. Lind selected four songs for the women to sing and one for a combined group of men and women.

Campbell grad earns honor

COLUMBUS

Samantha Elizabeth Arrowsmith of Campbell has been recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda, the national leadership and honors organization at Ohio State University.

Sigma Alpha Lambda is dedicated to promoting and rewarding academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and lifelong professional development.

Arrowsmith is a 2011 Campbell Memorial High School graduate and class valedictorian. She is a junior at OSU, majoring in psychology.

EGCC offers certificate for oil and gas industry

YOUNGSTOWN

Eastern Gateway Community College now offers a short-term certificate to prepare students for a job in the oil and gas industry operation and maintenance technician field.

The four-course program can be completed within one 16-week semester.

Spring classes begin Jan. 13. Eastern Gateway recommends that those interested in an oil and gas career talk to an adviser about a course of preparation and instruction.
