Graduates from Yale
Joel Stanley Beckett has graduated from Yale School of Medicine with Doctor of Medicine and Master of Health Sciences degrees.
Dr. Beckett is the son of Rodney and Deborah (DeGenova) Beckett of Mount Vernon, Ohio. His mother is formerly of Poland. Dr. Beckett also has many relatives in Mahoning County.
Dr. Beckett graduated from Mount Vernon High School in 2004 and attended Kenyon College. At Kenyon, he received many accolades, including the CRC Chemistry Achievement Award, Jelga Biology Award, ACS Award in Organic Chemistry, the Johnson Prize in Chemistry and the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. He was elected to Phi Beta Kappa as a junior and into Sigma Xi. He graduated with highest honors in chemistry and thesis distinction, and was named co-valedictorian of the class of 2008.
At Yale, Dr. Beckett developed his interest in research and service. Over the course of five years, he authored nine scientific articles, presented at six national conferences and was awarded a Doris Duke Fellowship and the Farr Scholar Award. His work primarily focused on using new methods of magnetic resonance imaging to identify functional networks in the brain.
He traveled to Colombia in November 2011 with a team of reconstructive surgeons to perform free cleft-lip and palate surgeries on nearly 100 children.
Dr. Beckett will move to Los Angeles to be a neurosurgery resident at UCLA Medical Center.
