Chrismons decorate the tree at Grace United Methodist Church.
The symbols of Christ in white and gold designs were handcrafted with care and love by children at the church ranging in age from 3 years old through sixth grade. The symbols on the tree were made about 15 years ago; new ones were added about two years ago.
Jim and Mary Fuller, Grace members for 55 years, are among church members who appreciate the craft effort of the children. Mary Fuller taught Sunday school for 25 years at Grace UMC and “really enjoyed it.”
Mary Fuller recalled a visit to a church in Garrettsville, which featured a Chrismon-decorated tree. It inspired her to have Grace children make the designs and decorate them. Serving on the worship committee, the couple coordinates the tree setup and decorating.
About 20 years ago, the church had Chrismons made of polystyrene foam, she said. They decorated a hall in the church for the season.
The current Chrismons were made of white cardstock. “We kept it simple,” Mary Fuller said. Gold glitter highlights were used.
“Lots of glitter went into them,” she said. “If the kids could spread glue and spinkle glitter, it worked.”
The Chrismons are featured on a tree, decorated with white lights, that stands on the altar at the church.
“The children made them beautiful, and they’re meaningful,” Jim Fuller said.
Some children even wrote their names on the back of the symbols.
The Rev. Glenn Hamilton, pastor, said he uses the Chrismon-decorated tree in one of his children’s messages during Advent. “It’s another way for the children to learn our Lord,” he said. Other pastors throughout the years also have incorporated the Chrismons into the children’s message.
The Chrismon tree is a highlight on the Christmas altar at the church at 1725 Drexel Ave. NW.
The Chancel Choir, directed by Savontae Diggs, will present the Christmas cantata “Rejoice in His Coming” during the worhip service at 9:45 a.m. Sunday.
A candlelight Christmas Eve service will be at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.
