Hilltop Elementary School Reading Stars got a big surprise during their lunch periods Dec. 3.

The students received a visit from Pete and Penny Penguin of Youngstown State University, who were accompanied by several YSU student-athletes.

The visit was a reward for the school’s Reading Stars who read every day in the month of November. The Reading Stars program is a way to encourage the students to read and to make reading fun.

Football player Torrian Pace, tennis player Carolyn Jesko, basketball player Liz Hornberger, baseball player Nick DiNello, cheerleader Sarah Perry, Sarah Ingalls, Kelly Stowe, Angela Molaskey and Aislynn Merling visited the students throughout the four lunch periods. Some of the student-athletes also read to the kindergarten classes.

After posing for pictures with the Hilltop Reading Stars, YSU student-athletes and Pete and Penny, Pace spoke to the first-grade students and then took a few questions

“It is very important to read. Reading is the foundation of education. I know sometimes you don’t feel like it, but if you pick up a good book, it will take you far,” Pace told the students.
